Abstract

This chapter examines the socio-organisational dynamics shaping scientific collaboration within research groups. It explores how evolving academic structures, leadership styles and institutional pressures influence teamwork, highlighting tensions between autonomy and interdependence, and vertical versus horizontal organisation. The chapter critiques the romanticised view of collaboration, emphasising its complexity, emotional dimensions and embedded power dynamics. It also discusses the impact of digitalisation, diversity and performance metrics on collaborative environments. Practical suggestions are offered to enhance collaboration, including fostering interdisciplinary engagement, promoting inclusive leadership and implementing feedback mechanisms. The chapter calls for a nuanced understanding of collaboration as a dynamic, context-dependent process essential to scientific innovation and productivity.
