Abstract

This chapter explores the critical role of emotional leadership in academic research environments, emphasising how emotional intelligence and management shape collaboration, productivity and well-being. It critiques the traditional “good student” model, focused on individual achievement, and advocates for a shift toward emotionally aware, team-oriented leadership. Drawing on real-world examples and research, the chapter highlights how emotional climates, interpersonal dynamics and institutional structures influence scientific collaboration. The chapter also addresses challenges in hybrid work settings, emphasising the need for clear communication, flexible structures and inclusive policies. It calls for a redefinition of academic success, one that values empathy, adaptability and collective engagement alongside intellectual rigour. Practical recommendations are provided to cultivate emotionally intelligent leadership and enhance well-being in research teams.
