Abstract

This chapter offers a comprehensive guide to fostering healthier, more collaborative and impactful research environments in academia. It addresses systemic challenges such as disciplinary silos, time management paradoxes, emotional tensions and ego-driven dynamics that hinder scientific progress. Emphasising interdisciplinary collaboration, emotional intelligence and inclusive leadership, the chapter advocates for a shift from hyper-specialisation and overcommitment toward sustainable, team-centred practices. It explores the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in research and education, and the importance of personal branding and digital communication for public engagement. The chapter introduces “critical coaching” as a pragmatic, system-oriented approach to leadership development tailored for sceptical academics. Practical strategies are provided to enhance collaboration, feedback culture, time management and societal relevance.
