Abstract

I would like to note that Erich Fromm lived through the rise of classical fascism, World War II, the most destructive in human history, the Holocaust, and the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He did lose friends and family, and yet, he was fundamentally an optimist. Once again, we live in a time of the ascendancy of a variety of reactionary, authoritarian movements. We have called them fascist, but, at the same time, we see the difference between contemporary movements and classical fascism, especially in Italy, Germany, and Spain. And like Fromm, I remain hopeful.
