Abstract

Violinists recording from the 1960s embraced diverse jazz categories, spanning from straight-ahead to third stream to fusion. Many, like Stuff Smith, favored amplified violins, deviating from classical rigidity. An influential album, Violin Summit , featured Jean-Luc Ponty alongside Stephane Grappelli, Stuff Smith, and Svend Asmussen, marking a significant convergence of older and younger jazz violinists. This live recording provided a unique opportunity for audiences to compare different violin approaches. Other noteworthy late twentieth-century violinists include Joe Kennedy Jr., Leroy Jenkins, John Blake, Gayle Dixon, Regina Carter, and Billy Bang.
