Jazz Cellobration
Abstract
The first important jazz cellists were bass players such as Oscar Pettiford and Ray Brown, who mostly played pizzicato instead of bowing. Later cellists such as Harry Babasin, Fred Katz, and Nathan Gershman became known during the 1950s because their sound was an important ingredient in the West Coast cool jazz sound. After this period, cellists started recording a wider variety of jazz, including players such as Akua Dixon, David Eyges, Matt Brubeck, Hank Roberts, Abdul Wadud, Eileen Folson, and Mark Summer.
