Alone Together
Abstract
In the 1980s, jazz saw a transformative shift with the emergence of string quartets as stand-alone ensembles and jazz band additions, redefining the roles of violins, violas, and cellos. Jazz string players challenged norms, blending novel sounds with established jazz patterns and expanding the genre’s boundaries. Retaining key jazz characteristics, these ensembles, including Kronos, Black Swan, and Turtle Island Quartet, embraced a mix of improvisation and composed music, drawing inspiration from diverse genres such as African American music, bluegrass, rock, classical, and avant-garde influences.
