Abstract

This chapter sets out the context of social work, aspects of its history and current concerns, and ethics and values, namely how social worker’s ‘code of ethics’ would suggest we need to pay closer attention to how we think about and respond to the area of mental health. I make links between the drawbacks of ignoring the wider systems both in individual families for social work, and in individuals for mental health. I introduce social GRACES, aspects of identity that impact the work we do. I consider issues regarding stigma and power around mental health and reflect on what is covered within social work training programmes.
