Abstract

This chapter considers the current mental health system, reflecting on any progress made, in general and for women in particular. I discuss the medical model of mental health, its limitations, the area of psychiatric medication and the introduction of psychosocial models. I consider the role of the political and economic system within people’s distress and how it is understood. I also discuss media representation of mental health and how that influences public perceptions. I include case studies to demonstrate the predominance of the medical model in social work situations.
