Abstract

In this chapter, I juxtapose for the reader the difference in education between Palestine in the 1930s and the present. There is a common assumption that with time and resources, we evolve as a society. We look to the past to learn from our mistakes, noting how far we have progressed. The purposeful juxtaposition in this chapter highlights the impact of military occupation, changes in society, and how the women in this narrative turn to music as an outlet, passion, and pathway to freedom. As a Westerner, I see the world through this common assumption. As someone who spent time in Palestine, I know these baseline expectations for progress do not apply. In Palestine, the rules of engagement are inverted – what's abnormal is normalized.
