Abstract

Palestinian identity is either (a) denied or (b) controlled/weaponized by those in power. Similarly, women's identities are often (a) denied or (b) controlled/weaponized by those in power. Thus, Palestinian women are faced with dual oppression. In this chapter, I examine how the women describe their identity from multiple vantage points: their inward view of their identity; how they are perceived by society based on the variables of context, identity markers (passports, ID cards, accent, appearance); and the impact of the inward/outward definitions on their daily lives including freedom of movement, daily decisions, and their mental health.
