Abstract

The final chapter of the book contains a set of 19 quick reference cards (QRCs). These cards offer a concise summary and brief guide that can be used when developing a study on torturous environments. QRC 1 provides a flowchart for a standard study. QRCs 2-3 review safety considerations in relation to victims and witnesses and the handling and management of sensitive data. QRCs 4–7 offer guidance on working with victims, including the ethical aspects of interviewing, trauma-sensitive interviewing techniques, brief interview models, and intervention strategies for managing critical or overwhelming emotions during interviews. QRCs 8–17 deal with specific aspects of the documentation, including legal safeguards before and during detention, minimum conditions of short- and long-term detention, elements to observe during a monitoring visit, documentation of solitary confinement, sleep deprivation, threats of fear-producing conditions, actions that override the victim&s;s ability to control, attacks on identity, dignity and self, collection of information on sexual and gender-related assaults, and analysis of coercive interrogations. Finally, QRCs 18 and 19 deal with the analysis of the consistency of the victim&s;s discourse and a checklist of the main community impacts.
