A Distance between US
Abstract
Humans are wired for connection, and when that connection is severed or unattainable, suicidality can take root. This chapter explores thwarted belongingness—the deep sense of isolation, rejection, or feeling unseen—as a key driver of suicidal distress. It examines how attachment wounds, social disconnection, and perceived burdensomeness reinforce this state, making it difficult for individuals to seek or accept support. Clinically, it highlights strategies for restoring connection, challenging self-perceptions of unworthiness, and fostering a sense of belonging as a protective factor against suicide.
