Abstract

This chapter explores the practice of welcoming the unwanted. This involves approaching difficult thoughts, feelings, and sensations with curiosity, compassion, and willingness rather than avoidance. Drawing from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), we examine how grounding and mindfulness practices can help regulate the nervous system, create space from distressing mental events, and make room for value-guided action. Through case examples and accessible exercises, you’ll learn how to notice the control agenda when it appears, discern its workability, and gently pivot toward more sustainable responses. By blending compassion with present-moment skills, these practices support both psychological flexibility and resilience, helping you remain anchored even when the inner landscape feels turbulent.
