The Hunt for the Wild Unicorn
Abstract
The unicorn symbolises the mystery of the magical beast that never was and captures imaginations. The enigma of the unicorn is discussed while the reader is being captivated by the Hunting Series tapestries at the Cloisters in New York. Participation with the drama of the unicorn leads to entering the ancient human mystery of the Magical Animal that appears out of the Unknown, something like the Kantian ‘thing-in-itself’. Staying with the unknown provoked surging movements of affective life. The hunt is a quest for something enigmatic and unpredictable, a hunger for aliveness, which in modern times may be lost. There is less of an enlivening contact with the unknown. Bringing back the seven tapestries is to bring back the enigma and the unpredictable.
