An Ecological Systems Approach for Promoting the Enhancement of Student Support Policies at Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in South Africa
Abstract
This chapter reflects on and aims to inform and improve student support policies within higher education institutions (HEIs), to ensure that they are more inclusive and responsive to the diverse needs of students. Well-structured student support policies are critical in fostering supportive and healthy educational environments, which are essential for the overall academic and personal success and well-being of the global academic community. This chapter addresses this gap by analysing policies from four HEIs and providing recommendations to enhance inclusivity and student well-being. Employing the Ecological Systems Theory and the Biopsychosocial Approach, this chapter highlights a range of gaps that exist in South African HEIs’ strategies for promoting student well-being. The key themes covered in this chapter involve legal and policy frameworks, challenges in student support and strategies for effective student support. The findings are based on a documentary analysis of student support policies from four higher education institutions in South Africa. The findings emphasise the need for comprehensive mental health support, increased accessibility of student support services and the integration of holistic wellness practices into institutional frameworks.
