Abstract

Mental health issues are a significant global concern, notably among tertiary students who experience stress and anxiety from various demands. The rising reports of mental health challenges among students underscore the urgent need for effective support systems in colleges and universities. This chapter examines the mental health issues faced by university students in Eswatini, their coping mechanisms and the barriers to their reaching out for psychosocial support. Using a qualitative methodology based on the stress and coping theory, semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted. Data collected revealed that stigma significantly hinders access to support opportunities for students and their families. Without adequate access to counselling services, students often resort to unhealthy coping strategies and lack robust social support networks, increasing their risk of mental health issues. The intergenerational effects of these challenges further strain public health systems by worsening conditions like depression, anxiety and substance misuse. To effectively tackle these challenges, a comprehensive approach that includes implementing campus-wide education and destigmatisation efforts, along with improved coordination of care, can significantly reduce the stigma around seeking mental health support. Overall, the findings highlight the critical need for higher education institutions in Eswatini to prioritise mental health in their policies and resource allocation, fostering a supportive learning environment that enhances student well-being and success. A total of thirty participants were recruited, comprising students who took part in three focus group discussions (FGDs) and eight individual semi-structured interviews. Each FGD included between eight and ten students, while interviews were conducted to capture more personal and potentially sensitive insights.
