Abstract

This chapter investigates the impact of collaborative approaches to GBV prevention through partnerships between universities and local organisations, with a specific focus on higher education institutions in Zimbabwe. The primary objective is to assess how these collaborations contribute to the effective prevention of GBV as well as empower students to be active agents in the fight against GBV on campuses. Data was gathered through twenty in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, including university administrators, student leaders and representatives from local organisations, complemented by document analysis. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. Findings reveal that universities contribute research capacity and educational frameworks while local organisations provide practical experience, community networks and targeted support services. The study also highlights the significance of these partnerships in preparing students to actively promote gender equity and build violence-free communities. The findings have important implications for improving student support in Zimbabwe, underscoring the value of coordinated, multifaceted approaches in addressing GBV in universities. Collaborative efforts between educational institutions and local organisations not only enhance the effectiveness of GBV prevention strategies but also foster long-term cultural change by engaging young people as advocates for gender equality.
