Why do some students experience impostor syndrome?
Abstract
From Chapter 7 , readers will gain a nuanced understanding of impostor syndrome, with a detailed explanation of how this phenomenon holds students back from reaching their true potential. Outlining how impostor syndrome is much more debilitating than normal self-doubt, this chapter explores the key features of impostor syndrome, and the psychological impact it has on those that experience it. The chapter also considers contextual factors, such as gender and ethnicity, as well as demonstrating how the phenomenon can affect children from a surprisingly young age. Finally, it illustrates how the internal barrier thrown up by impostor syndrome may affect students in the classroom.
