Abstract

In the modern workplace, development of employees often focuses on mitigation of weaknesses. However, focusing on a strengths-based approach can be more productive, particularly for neurodivergent individuals. This chapter examines what a strengths-based approach might look like for neurodivergent individuals and makes a case for applying that more broadly in the workplace to increase productivity, accelerate development and improve retention and wellbeing. The concept of “spiky profiles” is introduced: a tool to map individual strengths and challenges which can aid discussions of neurodivergent individuals’ capabilities. A common challenge of strengths-based approaches is how to handle development areas. A practical tool is introduced which will help managers work with their team to address development areas and create an action plan. Readers will come from this chapter with new perspectives on what it means to learn and develop using strengths-based tools, which they can apply to both their neurodivergent and neurotypical team members.
