Abstract

This chapter is based on research on performance art in Lithuania involving food and technology. It is important to understand this intersection better due to the potential of food in the communication of identity and transformation. The research task was to define the keywords that interconnect the three performance cases addressed in the current study. The research question was: How can the national identity of performance artists be expressed in performance artwork using food and technology? The theories and concepts applied in this study are technology and food as radical innovations and multisensory performances. The method applied is arts-based action research (ABAR). This research led to the following findings: Technology within food transforms the role of food into artistic artefacts, smells are the actors within the theme of performance, food contributes to the communication of national identity and performances with food and technology comment on the rapid development of technology. The findings are aimed at artists and venues working on multisensory performances.
