Abstract

Industry 5.0 signifies a transformative shift in industrial development, emphasizing the integration of advanced technologies with sustainability, human-centric values, and long-term resilience. This chapter examines how sustainability serves as a core principle in Industry 5.0, distinguishing it fundamentally from the efficiency-driven model of Industry 4.0. It highlights the incorporation of circular economy practices, eco-innovation, and green technologies into modern manufacturing and supply chains. Key strategies include waste minimization, resource optimization, regenerative design, and the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain for energy management, waste reduction, and ethical sourcing. The chapter also examines the societal and ethical dimensions of sustainable transformation, including its impact on labor markets, consumer behavior, and regulatory frameworks. Significant challenges—including regulatory fragmentation, high initial costs, and technological integration barriers—are analyzed, along with strategic pathways to address them. Furthermore, the discussion outlines future opportunities for scaling green technologies, harmonizing policy, and advancing education to support a skilled, sustainability-focused workforce. With innovation aligned to ecological responsibility and social equity, Industry 5.0 is set not only as a platform for industrial development but also as the driver of sustainable economic growth worldwide and a resilient, sustainable future.
