Abstract

Chapter 1 opens with a field report from the ‘No Faith in Fossil Fuels’ service held in London in 2023, which introduces the central theme of this book: theological change from climate pressures. Analysing data from six Christian organisations in the United Kingdom, the argument of this book uses social science-engaged theology—including interviews, surveys and observations—to examine how Christian climate activism and advocacy are informing ecotheological change, and the reverse. The argument foregrounds soteriology and an operative theology linking practice, climate horizons and belief. Findings challenge claims about Christian anthropocentrism and show how faith resources hope, justice and action, with implications for churches and wider culture change.
