Life Course, Cumulative Disadvantage, and Labeling
Abstract
The following chapter establishes the theoretical framework of this research. It focuses on the life course labeling perspective which integrates Sampson and Laub's (1993) life course theory with the labeling perspective. Life course theory is particularly applicable to the study of foster youth who are entering adulthood. Concepts of turning points, self-agency, cumulative disadvantage, and labeling are expounded upon as they are central to the current study. The chapter concludes with consideration of the application of these theoretical concepts to youth aging out of care.
