Employment of Youth Aging Out of Care
Abstract
Employment has been a high priority of federal policy aimed at preparing foster youth for independent living since the 1890s. Despite this long-term policy goal, research shows that foster youth have higher rates of unemployment compared to youth in the general population. This chapter reviews research in this area, highlighting research examining factors related to employment outcomes among youth aging out of foster care. These factors include individual factors, foster care characteristics, and educational attainment.
