Abstract

Over the past two decades, a growing interest in wellbeing in higher education has been driven by the need to mitigate mental health challenges. Support systems in higher education are straining under an increased burden from low student and staff wellbeing. It is therefore time to think more systemically about how we address these issues. Considering how educators can design learning environments that enable wellbeing is one such systemic approach. In this chapter, we outline the development of a Wellbeing Integrated Learning Design (WILD) framework to support this aim and share case study examples of its implementation across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The WILD framework is an evidence-based approach to designing learning environments that foster connection, wellbeing, and motivation. We conclude by reflecting on the value of such a tool for supporting policy recommendations in higher education.
