Abstract

This chapter explores the complex role of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping how students learn and think. As tools like ChatGPT become more accessible in classrooms and at home, they offer both opportunities and challenges for education. This chapter investigates how AI can support learning by offering immediate feedback, simplifying complex ideas, and fostering curiosity. However, it also addresses the potential downsides, including reduced cognitive effort, overreliance on external assistance, and the illusion of understanding without true mastery. Drawing on cognitive science research, this chapter explains how learning happens through effortful retrieval, memory consolidation, and problem-solving—and how excessive dependence on AI can short-circuit these processes. Readers will gain practical strategies to help students use AI as a supportive learning aid rather than a shortcut. By the end of this chapter, educators and parents will be equipped with tools and frameworks to guide students in using AI thoughtfully and critically, ensuring that technology enhances rather than replaces meaningful learning.
