Abstract

This chapter discusses the progression from novice to expert learner by examining how thinking and decision-making evolve with experience. It explains that novices tend to rely on fixed rules and focus on surface details, often overestimating their knowledge, while experts think flexibly and focus on deeper principles. This chapter emphasises the importance of reflection in revealing knowledge gaps and fostering true expertise. It introduces simple, evidence-based learning rules designed to guide novices when intuition and experience are limited. By developing richer mental models, students can better interpret situations, make wiser decisions, and apply strategies consistently. This chapter provides several common scenarios to help learners transform abstract concepts into concrete experiences, encouraging active reflection and deeper understanding. Additionally, it explores the role of metacognition and self-regulation in helping students think clearly, monitor their progress, and adjust their approaches, turning effort into effective, independent learning. Readers will gain practical insights into how to support learners in building stronger habits and becoming self-directed experts capable of navigating complex challenges.
