The Divine Disillusionment Narrative
Abstract
This chapter analyzes the Divine Disillusionment Narrative, in which admiration for religious exemplars collapses into critique and moral protest. Though only eight percent of the study&s;s dataset, these stories indict hypocrisy and exclusion while redirecting admiration toward peers and the self. Drawing on Paulo Freire&s;s Pedagogy of the Oppressed , the chapter interprets these stories as exercises in admirational discernment—reclaiming moral authority through resistance. Disillusionment emerges not as rejection of religion but as reformist faith demanding renewal.
