Abstract

In this chapter we discuss observation as a product of perception that is influenced by the observer&s;s attitudes, expectations and emotional states. We explore the relevance of different social psychological theories to understanding and appreciating the complex mental processes that take place during observation. It is important for the observer to recognise the influence of these processes on the observation and, thus, seek to increase self-awareness, to recognise and address bias.
