Adapting Nature-Based Risky Outdoor Play Practices
Abstract
Jill Somerville compares how nature-based risky play is implemented in Norway and Northern Ireland, revealing how cultural norms, environmental access, and educator confidence shape practice. Based on a participatory action research study, the chapter illustrates how Norwegian strategies such as trusting children&s;s autonomy and embracing natural risk were adapted in a more structured, risk-averse Northern Ireland context. It illuminates the benefits of risky play while addressing challenges educators face, including regulatory pressures, limited natural spaces, and parental safety concerns.
