ʻĀina as Sibling
Abstract
Through a qualitative study of early childhood educators in Hawai‘i, Shin Ae Han offers insights into how ʻāina-based and Indigenous pedagogies shape teaching and learning across diverse educational settings in Hawai‘i. Emphasizing Hawaiian values such as aloha ʻāina (love for the land) and mālama ʻāina (care for the land), Han explores how daily encounters with nature foster children&s;s connections to place, culture, and community. The chapter discusses the practical and philosophical dimensions of implementing such approaches in diverse early childhood contexts.
