Annus Horribilis
Abstract
This chapter compares how the events of 1989, which marked the fall of communism in Central and Eastern Europe, are remembered differently across the Balkans and Central and Eastern Europe. The chapter examines how the ‘Annus Mirabilis’ (miraculous year) of 1989 is interpreted in the context of post-communist transitions, national identity formation, and memory politics in different countries, exploring how the legacy of these events shapes contemporary security and foreign policy.
