Abstract

This chapter will analyse Romania’s perspective between 2022 and 2023 on the Russia–Ukraine war, focusing on how historical memory – particularly regarding Romania’s own history with Russia, the Soviet Union, and its geopolitical position in Eastern Europe – shapes its response to the war. The chapter will discuss the role of memory in Romanian foreign policy, national security, and the ways historical events are used to frame Romania’s response to the crisis.
