Abstract

This chapter addresses how to navigate complex systems by distinguishing between systemic and systematic thinking. It draws on disciplines such as systems theory, cybernetics, design, and organizational studies. A range of frameworks is introduced to support early framing and sensemaking, including Cynefin, Critical Systems Heuristics, Soft Systems Methodology, DSRP, Theory U, and Design Thinking. The chapter highlights the role of feedback, uncertainty, boundary judgments, and participation in shaping effective action. Donella Meadows’ 12 leverage points are used to classify interventions from surface-level tweaks to deeper shifts in structure, goals, and paradigms. Emphasis is placed on reflexive practice, small experiments, and selecting methods based on problem type, context, and system behaviour.]
