Abstract

Social support plays a vital role in addressing intimate partner violence (IPV), offering survivors the security, strength, and resources needed to heal and rebuild their lives. This chapter examines the impact of communities, peer groups, and family networks in preventing and responding to IPV. Strong social connections help break cycles of isolation and empower survivors by providing emotional validation, practical assistance, and pathways to safety. This chapter highlights the importance of safe spaces and support groups, where survivors can share experiences, access resources, and regain a sense of control over their lives. It explores how peer support and community-based interventions contribute to resilience, helping survivors develop coping strategies and rebuild their self-worth. Additionally, it discusses the role of bystanders, allies, and advocacy groups in challenging harmful social norms and creating environments that prioritize safety and justice. By strengthening social ties, individuals and communities can play a transformative role in IPV prevention and intervention. This chapter underscores the need for trauma-informed approaches that center survivors’ voices and promote long-term support networks, ultimately fostering agency, empowerment, and lasting change.
