Abstract

Economic abuse by close partners is a major type of family violence. It involves methods that hinder victims from being financially independent. To address violence against women, especially within an indigenous context, it is essential to invest in long-term plans. These plans should tackle the deep-rooted obstacles to equal treatment of men and women. This chapter will outline various economic empowerment tools. It will further examine how legal frameworks related to intimate partner violence (IPV) can enhance financial autonomy. It will also discuss the socio-cultural influences on societal attitudes towards IPV and further explore the vital role of social work support within the context of economic empowerment. Relevant theoretical frameworks underpinning economic empowerment will be considered. Lastly, future directions informed by best practices and insights gained will be presented in this chapter.
