Abstract

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive issue that deeply affects women’s social, emotional, and cultural well-being. While economic empowerment is often viewed as a pathway to breaking cycles of abuse, true healing requires a holistic approach that integrates emotional, spiritual, and cultural dimensions of well-being. This chapter explores how holistic wellness practices—rooted in creative therapies such as music, yarn therapy, storytelling, dance, art, song, and aromatherapy—can support women in reclaiming their autonomy and fostering resilience. Grounded in the philosophy of Malu Mai, in Torres Strait Islander language, Malu meaning “Ocean” signifying (cleansing and healing) and Mai meaning “Pearl” signifying (transformation and renewal). This chapter highlights the importance of culturally responsive healing in IPV interventions. By fostering hope, peace, and harmony within individuals, families, and communities, holistic wellness approaches empower women not only to heal from trauma but also to build sustainable pathways toward financial independence, autonomy, and self-determination. Through evidence-based practice incorporating healing modalities, this chapter advocates for an integrated framework that acknowledges the interconnectedness of body, mind, heart, soul, and spirit in addressing IPV and advancing women’s economic empowerment.
