Abstract

This chapter seeks to delve into the complex origins of intimate partner violence (IPV), with a specific focus on the profound influence of socio-cultural norms and economic disparities. It will report on how deeply cultural beliefs, traditional gender roles, and societal expectations sustain power imbalances and normalise violence within intimate relationships. Moreover, the discussion will also shed light on how patriarchal systems, honour-based cultural values, and the stigmatisation of victims perpetuate the prevalence of IPV in diverse socio-cultural contexts. Furthermore, this chapter will show how economic inequality emerges as a critical factor in intensifying IPV, influencing both the victims’ vulnerability and perpetrators’ behaviours. This chapter will also elaborate on how financial dependence, poverty, and unemployment constrain the victims’ autonomy, frequently binding them to abusive environments. Simultaneously, economic stress and societal pressures tied to conventional ideals of masculinity will be analysed as potential catalysts for violent behaviour. These intertwined socio-cultural and economic dynamics will be explored within global and local contexts to illustrate their role in shaping the incidence and severity of IPV. In this chapter, the author will adopt a comprehensive approach to addressing IPV by integrating theoretical frameworks and advocating for interventions aimed at dismantling harmful socio-cultural norms, promoting gender equality, and addressing structural economic inequalities. Education and awareness are vital for dismantling harmful gender norms and empowering women to recognise and assert their constitutionally enshrined rights. This chapter explores educational initiatives, campaigns, and programmes that equip women with knowledge and tools to challenge IPV and foster societal change.
