Abstract

Āṟumuka Nāvalar is a major figure in the nineteenth-century socioreligious and literary landscape of Sri Lankan Jaffna and Tamil Nadu. He followed all the strategies possible to propagate Tamil Saivism 1 , as the missionaries did for Christianity. It was a great honour for him to redefine and modernize Tamil Saivism in order to address contemporary needs; he went to the extent of touching the borderline of the passionate and the obsessive, as he felt it was his distinctive calling.
