Abstract

In order to have an insight into the factors that led to the refutation of Aruṭpā , a basic perception is necessary of a seemingly unrelated overview of the 19th-century socio-politico-religious backdrop of Jaffna, the port city of northern Sri Lanka. The name ‘Jaffna’ is a Portuguese adaptation of the Tamil name yāḻppāṇam (Port of the ‘ yāḻ ’ (lyre), a Tamil musical stringed instrument of yore). The city was the capital of an ancient Tamil kingdom there.
