Abstract

This chapter offers guidance on creating a school-wide reinforcement system. It begins by explaining the core principles of reinforcement and provides examples of how it can be used effectively to encourage positive behaviour. The chapter explores systematic approaches to reinforcement, including token economies and group contingencies. It emphasises the value of combining tangible or symbolic rewards with clear, specific verbal feedback. The distinction between general praise and behaviour-specific feedback is clarified. Additionally, the chapter underscores the importance of documenting the reinforcement system and training staff to implement it consistently. Common misconceptions about reinforcement are addressed at the end.
