Abstract

Building and maintaining a school-wide system for responding to unwanted behaviour is the focus of this chapter. Guidelines to help schools reach an agreement on behaviours to be managed by staff and on behaviours to be managed by administrators are provided. The chapter gives examples of the types of behaviours that require immediate support, behaviours that require referral, and behaviours that can be managed by staff. The purpose and process for making behaviour referrals is also explained, including the information that should be collected when making a referral. Suggestions for recording persistent classroom misbehaviour are also included. The chapter ends with a discussion on the role of consequences and examples of effective and ineffective consequences.
