Abstract

This chapter explores the core principles, or ‘big ideas,’ that form the foundation of the SWPBS framework. It begins by highlighting the value of a preventative approach to behaviour, emphasising the benefits of addressing issues before they emerge. The chapter then explains how student support is structured across a three-tiered continuum, with interventions tailored to varying levels of need. The concept of function-based thinking is introduced, along with practical examples of how the three-term contingency (antecedent, behaviour, and consequence) is applied at the whole-school level to reduce unwanted behaviour. The chapter also underscores the importance of using evidence-based practices and illustrates their application. It then examines the essential role of data in guiding decisions through a systematic, data-driven process. Finally, the chapter discusses the need for contextual and cultural adaptations to ensure SWPBS is responsive and relevant to diverse school communities.
