Using concepts from Marxist theory to understand literature
Abstract
“From each according to his ability; to each according to his needs.” Do you know who made this statement? When I first heard it, I believed that this saying, or something very much like it, came from the Bible. I had no idea that it came, instead, from Karl Marx (1818–1883). Because I knew that Marx objected to the exploitation of the faithful by organized religion, I never would have guessed that his theories were compatible with values many of us hold dear.
