Abstract

This chapter introduces the field of sport-for-development, highlighting its evolution as a distinct area within international development. It explores the potential and limitations of sport as a tool for social and cultural transformation. The work situates the field of study within broader conceptual and theoretical frameworks. It challenges the assumption that sport is inherently positive, emphasising the need to consider diverse and complex contexts in which development projects may be implemented and managed. The chapter outlines the approaches taken in the case studies outlined in the chapters of this book, emphasising the use of interviews and participant observation to analyse sport-for-development projects. It previews a range of case studies that explore how such initiatives were implemented in varied cultural and political settings. This introduction lays the groundwork for a critical exploration of this field at a significant timeframe, advocating for a balanced view of its challenges and opportunities in fostering meaningful development. Finally, the chapter outlines the significance of a project undertaken in India in 2003 and its impact on my engagement in this field.
