Volunteerism and Development in the Golden Triangle and the Slums of Bangkok
Abstract
This chapter explores sport-based micro projects in Thailand undertaken as part of a round-the-world travel itinerary. Focussing on marginalised children in the Golden Triangle region and Bangkok&s;s Klong Toey slum, the chapter examines the socio-political and cultural contexts that shape their circumstances. These initiatives were run in collaboration with local NGOs – Childlife Mae Sai and Urban Neighbours of Hope – organisations which address issues such as poverty, trafficking, and lack of access to education. In Mae Sai, football was used to promote social inclusion and team-building amongst stateless children at risk of exploitation. In Bangkok, a futsal programme aimed to provide safe, structured play for young people living in precarious urban conditions. The chapter situates these efforts within broader debates on international volunteerism, questioning its motivations, short-term impacts, and long-term sustainability. Whilst sport offered temporary relief and some positive experiences, deeper issues such as employment and housing remained largely unaddressed. The chapter critically assesses the role of sport in development and the ethical tensions inherent in volunteer-led interventions in such vulnerable communities.
