Analyzing Starr's Identity in The Hate U Give using Critical Race Feminism
Abstract
Outlining how students can analyze Starr’s intersectional identity in The Hate U Give using critical race feminism (CRF) ( Evans-Winters & Esposito, 2010 ), this chapter provides a theoretical foundation as well as suggested activities for secondary students. This theory allows readers to deeply investigate how Starr’s identity as a Black girl affects how she navigates attending a primarily white, upper-socioeconomic status private school. Student-friendly definitions of CRF concepts (multiple consciousness, silence, and talking back) are provided for direct application to the classroom. In line with the advocacy of the characters in the text, students can create a PSA or other piece of media to promote support for Black girls as a summative assessment. A list of additional texts to use with CRF is included.
