Teaching Criticality with The Last Cuentista
Abstract
This chapter will provide specific ways that teachers can implement Muhammad’s (2020) definition of Criticality in their secondary English classrooms, specifically using The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera. The chapter begins with an outline of the ideas that teachers can apply to any young adult text before moving into specific suggestions using The Last Cuentista . The chapter suggests ways that students can read YA literature and identify similarities in their own societies and why the books are warning against a future based on injustices as well as how they can take action in their communities to avoid such a future.
