Abstract

La Borinqueña ( Miranda-Rodriguez, 2022 ) is one of a series of comics in which the title character supports everyday Puerto Ricans working toward political and environmental justice. Rooted in Afro-Latinx, Indigenous, and community knowledge, La Borinqueña shows how we might draw on our different self/ves (as community members, individuals, even superheroes) to work for grassroots change. This chapter outlines how students and teachers reading La Borinqueña can apply two concepts— Muhammad’s (2020) distinction of critical/Critical and Gamez and Monreal’s (2025) theorization of unruly Latinidad(es)—to better understand how the multiplicities of our identities provide different locations of (everyday) resistance and advocacy.
